Kilpatrick Hills

Whangie's strange rocks

Kilpatrick Hills
Behind Overtoun House these hills offer plenty of walking opportunities for all abilities. Duncom is the highest hill in the Kilpatricks, while the Whangie is another popular climb with it's strange rock formations. At Milngavie there is Murdoch country park and the start of the West Highland Way that heads towards Loch Lomond and past Ben Lomond, the closest Munro to Glasgow.

At nearby Bearsden you can see the ruins of a Roman bath house evidence of the Roman occupation of this area (see Antonine Wall)

Dumbarton Rock

Dumbarton
Dumbarton the "ancient capital of Strathclyde" is steeped in history and is one of the possible sites of Camelot. Explore Dumbarton Castle at the top of Dumbarton Rock. Visit the Denny Tank and Scottish Maritime musuem Dumbarton's contribution to the industrial age.

Lomond Shore

Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond is the largest inland lake in Britain and is littered with numerous small islands. It is also Scotland's first National Park. Visit Balloch Country Park or Lomond Shores at the bottom of Loch Lomond, or Luss home of the Clan Colqhuon and the Highland soap "Take The High Road". Travel to Balmaha on the western shore of Loch Lomond and take a boat trip to Inch Murren the island of kings. Visit the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park at the base of Ben Lomond, the closest Munro mountain to Glasgow.

  Helensburgh
Located further along the Clyde Helensburgh is a Scottish seaside town complete with front and pier. Stroll along the sea front and visit the pier, or see the Hill House an example of Charles Rennie Macintosh's famous architecture.

Buchanan Street shops

Glasgow Cathedral

Glasgow
The city of Glasgow has something for all ages and tastes: shops, musuems, resturants, great architecture and culture. The city has many shopping centres: the Buchanan Galleries, Sauchihall Street and Argyle Street to name a few. The city centre is also a great place for a night out packed with bars and resturants. In the city's west end the Kelvingrove art museum and the Museum of Transport have plenty to offer the visitor.

Gaze up as you walk around Glasgow streets and you may see some of the other buildings designed by James Smith, architect of Overtoun House, including the McClellan galleries. Visit Glasgow Cathedral and you will find a statue of James White founder of Overtoun House.

Edinburgh Castle

Further Afield
Edinburgh
and Stirling are always firm favourites with our American teams principally for their historic castles.

To see the real beauty of Scotland travel north to see the Highlands and Islands, Britain's largest remaining wilderness.
